"Days Without Sunshine: Anita Bryant's Anti-Gay Crusade"
A Winter Party Festival Sanctioned Event
6:00 PM - 8:00 PM
Miami Beach Botanical Gardens
2000 Convention Center Drive, Miami Beach [map]
Entry: Free
Fort Lauderdale-based The Stonewall Library & Archives brings its well-received exhibit, "Days Without Sunshine: Anita Bryant's Anti-Gay Crusade", to the county targeted by this enemy of the LGBT community. In 1977, the Dade County ordinance that prohibited discrimination in housing, employment, loans and public accommodation based on race or religion was amended to include "affectional or sexual preference". That extension of civil rights to the LGBT community engendered a backlash among social conservatives. Anita Bryant; former beauty queen, singer and citrus industry spokesperson became one of the chief opponents of this measure. This exhibit can be viewed simultaneously with the "Gay American Heroes" memorial.
